Benji [VHS]

Benji [VHS] Review

Who Needs Hollywood is an incredible story of slammed doors, rejection, ridicule, and ultimately a tenacity that brought home to Joe Camp the #3 movie of the year, with no help whatsoever from Hollywood. Author of the recent National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd, Camp believes that anything is possible if you work hard enough and have faith in yourself. He was told by industry "experts" not to bother with his first film; that it wouldn't work. He proved the experts wrong and now he's at it again with a brand new career as an author. His best seller The Soul of a Horse is in its seventh printing and is changing the lives of horses all across the planet for the better. With this new book he hopes to do the same for people. Camp has written, produced and directed seven theatrical motion pictures cumulatively grossing well over the equivalent of 0 million in today's dollars, making him one of the most successful independent filmmakers of all time.

This book is an inspiring insight into how to make things happen, against all odds, and confirmation that every dream is, in fact, possible.

WHAT READERS AND CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT JOE CAMP

“Joe Camp is a master storyteller.” THE NEW YORK TIMES

“This book is absolutely fabulous! An amazing, amazing book. You’re going to love it.” JANET PARSHALL’S AMERICA

“The Hollywood glamor days are almost secondary, the theatrical drama virtually anti-climactic. In a strange, strong, compelling sense, the book is not about the making of a Hollywood movie. It is about faith....having faith in what you can do, in hanging on. It also is a love story, for Joe's first wife Carolyn, a college sweetheart who died too young but believed in him and for his present wife Kathleen. It is about strength and memories and family and the importance of little things like trust, observation, caring, questioning, mentoring, and doing something one believes in with someone one cares about, not just making money for the sake of the coins collected.” JACK L. KENNEDY, THE JOPLIN INDEPENDENT

“One cannot help but be touched by Camp’s love and sympathy for animals and by his eloquence on the subject.” MICHAEL KORDA, THE WASHINGTON POST

“Joe Camp is a gifted storyteller and the results are magical.” RICK LAMB, AUTHOR AND TV/RADIO HOST “THE HORSE SHOW”

"This book is fantastic! It has given me shivers, made me laugh and cry, and I just can't seem to put it down!" CHERYL PANNIER, WHO RADIO AM 1040 DES MOINES

“Joe Camp is a natural when it comes to understanding how animals tick and a genius at telling us their story.” MONTY ROBERTS, AUTHOR OF NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLER THE MAN WHO LISTENS TO HORSES

“Joe Camp has done it again. He grabs our attention right away, makes us laugh, cry, and believe in the possibility of all good things. A smart man, with a true gift of storytelling, Joe Camp brings us along for the ride, inspiring this reader to stay true to her passions. A really good read!!!!! MARJORIE SAMUELS - READER

“I got my book yesterday and hold Joe Camp responsible for my bloodshot eyes. I couldn't put it down and morning came early!!! Joe transports me into his words. I feel like I am right there sharing his experiences.” RUTH SWANDER – READER

“I love this book! It is so hard to put it down, but I don't want it to end! I can't wait for the next one !!!!!!!!!” NINA BLACK REID – READER

"I simply love the way Joe Camp writes. He stirs my soul. This is a must read book for everyone.” DEBBIE K - READER

“This book swept me away. From the first to last page I felt transported! It’s clever, witty, inspiring and a very fast read. I was sad when I finished it because I wanted to read more!” DEBBIE CHARTRAND - READER

American Tall Tales and Legends - Davy Crockett [VHS]

American Tall Tales and Legends - Davy Crockett [VHS] Review

The main problem with Davy Crockett--and there are a few--is its cringe-causing datedness. Had the makers of this 1986 show stuck to the Crockett-specific era of the late 19th to early 20th century, they would have spared modern viewers, particularly those in the 4 to 12 age group that's among this video's target audience, a bewildering, double-barreled exercise in time travel. Instead, they send audiences packing--first to a time when spiky-haired kids turned up tight-jean cuffs and starched polo collars to look cool and, pathetically, counted the one-time movie king Rambo among their heroes, and next to the famous frontiersman's early Tennessee, Indian-infested stomping grounds. It's a Back to the Future-style concept: We tag along as 14-year-old Ben, the quintessential '80s kid, zooms back and forth between the two eras by way of a magic biography on loan from his teacher, who has assigned a report on the folk hero. During his predictably half smart-alecky, half way-impressed interludes with Crockett (whose aw-shucks-style portrayal by Mac Davis is a highlight), Ben witnesses the coonskin cap wearer legendarily grin down a bear and hurl a wayward comet by its tail back into space. He also is nearly mauled by Deathhug, the entirely unrealistic costumed creature parading through several scenes as Crockett's pet bear.

But what's most important, judging by the tone of this film, is the pat morality lesson Ben lifts from Crockett--"Make sure you're right, then go ahead." Naturally, this mantra becomes a guiding principle back in 1986, where the former goof-off straightens his act. While Davy Crockett won't win over those used to watching slicker, sophisticated productions, there are a few moments of fun--McLean Stevenson shows up briefly as a craven Andrew Jackson, and Crockett's hillbilly high jinks at a fancy Washington dinner party seem less stale than genuinely silly. --Tammy La Gorce

Here Comes Peter Cottontail [VHS]

Here Comes Peter Cottontail [VHS] Review

VHS format. Have you ever wished for a classic Easter special to show your kids? Here Comes Peter Cottontail is a Rankin & Bass production that bears a marked similarity to the beloved Santa Claus Is Coming to Town. Narrator Seymour S. Sassafrass, voiced and sung by Danny Kaye, takes young viewers on a tour of the mythical April Valley and relates the story of how Peter Cottontail almost failed in his quest to become Chief Easter Bunny. Sassafrass peers into his magic egg, and viewers are introduced to Peter Cottontail--a spunky, ingenious young rabbit who is boastful, is prone to fibbing, and lacks a sense of responsibility. In order to become Chief Easter Bunny, Peter Cottontail must defeat the evil Irontail in a contest to deliver the most eggs on Easter Sunday. Through his trials, Peter Cottontail discovers the value of ingenuity, the importance of placing duty before pleasure, and the folly of self-conceit. Here Comes Peter Cottontail features catchy songs, great 1970s stop-motion animation, and a fun Easter tale. Parents will find themselves reminiscing over holidays gone by or wondering how they missed this show in their own childhood. The 2 and up crowd will be begging for another showing long after the Easter candy is a distant memory
